How to Use the IB Math Formula Booklet During Exams

Learn how to practise with the IB maths formula booklet, find formulas quickly, and avoid common exam-day mistakes.

The IB mathematics formula booklet is most useful when it becomes a familiar navigation tool. It supplies relationships, but you still need to recognise the topic, understand each variable, and choose a valid method.

Use the interactive Math AA SL formula booklet or Math AA HL formula booklet while learning. Use the official booklet and your school’s confirmed conditions for exam practice.

A reliable six-step method

For every booklet-based question:

  1. Classify the topic.
  2. Locate the relevant formula family.
  3. Identify each variable and unit.
  4. Check the formula’s conditions and restrictions.
  5. Rearrange before substituting.
  6. Check whether the answer is reasonable.

Writing the relationship before inserting numbers makes method marks visible and catches many calculator errors.

Learn the map, not page numbers

Page numbers can change between editions. Learn the booklet’s structure instead: which section contains functions, geometry, statistics, probability, or calculus, and where related equations sit within that section.

Practise short retrieval prompts such as “binomial distribution,” “trapezoidal rule,” or “compound interest.” Find the relevant relationship, define its symbols, then close the booklet and explain when it applies.

Know what is not supplied

The booklet does not replace:

  • Algebraic manipulation
  • Definitions and notation
  • Graph interpretation
  • Technology skills
  • Domain and assumption checks
  • Mathematical communication

Keep a separate “must know” list whenever practice reveals a missing identity, definition, or technique.

Avoid the common failure modes

  • First familiar formula: state what each symbol means in this question before using it.
  • Similar relationships: compare their conditions and draw a diagram or table.
  • Unit errors: convert before substitution and test the final unit.
  • Early rounding: retain exact values or calculator precision until the end.
  • Missing restrictions: check domains, angle mode, sample conditions, and model assumptions.

A fast weekly drill

Twice a week, choose five mixed questions and time only the recognition stage. For each one, write:

  1. Topic
  2. Relevant booklet section
  3. Formula or principle
  4. One condition
  5. One likely mistake

Then solve two of the five in full. This separates navigation practice from calculation practice and shows whether the real delay is finding a formula or using it.

Exam-day checklist

  • Confirm the permitted booklet and calculator arrangements with your school.
  • Read the complete question before searching.
  • Write the relationship before substituting.
  • Keep exact values until rounding is appropriate.
  • Include units and interpret results in context.
  • If an answer is impossible, revisit the model before repeating the arithmetic.

The goal is not to memorise every page. It is to make retrieval automatic enough that your attention stays on the mathematics.
