IB Math AA vs AI: Which One Should You Choose?

Compare IB Mathematics AA and AI by content, style, technology, level, and possible university prerequisites.

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI) emphasise different mathematical habits. Neither is simply “hard maths” or “easy maths,” and both are offered at SL and HL.

The Math AA SL course builds the shared foundations, while Math AA HL adds substantial depth in proof, complex numbers, vectors, probability, and calculus.

SL versus HL is a separate decision

Choosing AA or AI does not choose the level. HL adds content, depth, pace, and teaching time. A university prerequisite may name both the course and the level, so compare four options: AA SL, AA HL, AI SL, and AI HL.

Do not rely on a comparison that quietly matches AA HL against AI SL. That confuses a level difference with a course-style difference.

How the work feels

An AA lesson may focus on algebraic structure, proof, exact relationships, and building calculus techniques. An AI lesson may focus on selecting a model, using technology with substantial data, and interpreting an answer in context.

Both require reasoning. AA is not only mechanical algebra, and AI is not mathematics without explanation.

  • Do you enjoy deriving and manipulating expressions?
  • Are you more engaged by models, data, and interpretation?
  • Which representative problems can you solve after instruction?
  • Which weaknesses are you willing to practise consistently?
  • Which course and level do possible university pathways require?
  • Which option does your school teach and support well?

Check prerequisites first

Engineering, mathematics, economics, computer science, and some science degrees may specify mathematics prerequisites. Check the official course page for the relevant institution, degree, intake year, course, and level. Separate a formal prerequisite from assumed knowledge or a recommendation.

Recheck before final subject changes; requirements can change.

A practical selection method

Try a small set of representative AA and AI questions at the level you are considering:

  1. Attempt one AA algebra or calculus task and one AI modelling or statistics task.
  2. Review the explanations, then retry without notes.
  3. Record what was missing and how long the repair took.
  4. Check all realistic university prerequisites.
  5. Discuss the evidence with a mathematics teacher or coordinator.

Finally, consider the full Diploma workload. A suitable HL choice must coexist with two other Higher Level subjects, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, CAS, and school deadlines.

Choose the course that fits both your likely prerequisites and the kind of mathematics you are prepared to practise—not a reputation passed around by classmates.
