Units and Unit Conversion

This lesson opens the Measurement topic, which is all about applying maths to physical, real-world quantities — building, cooking, travel, trade work. Almost every measurement task starts with converting between units (grams to kilograms, millilitres to litres) before you can even begin the calculation, so getting comfortable with this now saves errors in every later lesson in this topic. By the end you'll be able to convert confidently between common metric units, and use estimation to sanity-check whether an answer is realistic.
Common Metric Conversions

Converting to a smaller unit means multiplying; converting to a larger unit means dividing.

Precision and Estimation

A measurement's precision is limited by the tool used — e.g. a ruler marked in mm can't give more precise readings than the nearest mm. Rounding and estimation are used to sanity-check whether a calculated answer is realistic.

Common ErrorAlways double-check which direction to convert — multiplying when you should divide (or vice versa) gives an answer that's off by a large factor. A quick sanity check (should this number get bigger or smaller?) catches this.
Worked Example Convert 2.4 km to metres, and 3500 mL to litres.
1km to m: multiply by 1000 (going to a smaller unit)2.4×1000=2400 m2.4 \times 1000 = 2400\text{ m}
2mL to L: divide by 1000 (going to a larger unit)3500÷1000=3.5 L3500 \div 1000 = 3.5\text{ L}
